GT News: GT Bicycles US Open Race Report
5/26/2009
The GT Bicycles MTB team split their efforts between Europe and the United States over the weekend. With so many events to choose from going on around the world the team goes where the best competition and best events are. The GT American squad of Eric “EC” Carter, Kevin “the Rookie” Aiello, Tyler McCaul and Master-wrenchman John Canepa made their way to Mountain Creek, New Jersey to Diablo Freeride Park which is home of the US Open of mountain biking.
The team took part in two separate events being held over the weekend. The first was the Giant Slalom which is a flowing course with banked turns. With a talented field of fast competitors it would be tough to earn a top spot. After everyone’s times clocked the GT boys would fare pretty well with the master Eric Carter landing on the podium with a 5th place and the youngsters Kevin and Tyler getting 8th and 9th respectively.
Next up was the legendary US Open downhill. The downhill course at the Open is a favorite of gravity racers everywhere with its mix of technical rocks and fast steep sections. There were well over 100 Pro men entries making it anybody’s race. The guys got in plenty of practice and had the course dialed for the finals but the one thing they didn’t get to practice with was rain. That’s right… rain! The precipitation rolled in about an hour before the finals started which would change everyone’s strategy on dealing with the course. EC would find the course a little extra challenging and still managed a very respectable top-20 finish in 16th place. GT teammates Aiello and McCaul rolled across the timer in 21st and 22nd.
It was fun filled weekend for the GT Bicycles team and now they look forward to their upcoming races in Fort William, Scotland and Ashland, Oregon. Be sure to follow www.gtbicycles.com for more news on the GT professional racing teams.
