GT News: Maribor World Cup

After packing everything away in Willingen, Germany,  the 'roadteam' started driving to Lake Garda in Italy to chill out and train for two days before we keep going to the next World Cup in Maribor, Slovenia. It is great to make the best of our days off on the road. This time it definitely worked out great! The weather was beautiful and there were just happy faces around. What do you expect when a great bunch gets together in a place like this to go riding, eat good Italian food, drink proper coffee, cliff jump in the lake and take our time to relax before the next big race?

The main journey was on Tuesday. We did one of the most amazing rides ever. Sick trails in the most beautiful area ever: Mnt Baldo - Mnt Altissimo - Navene! After riding up two gondolas, we dropped down in the next valley to start climbing for about 1,5h to Altissimo. From there we started a 20km single track DH to go down and swim and eat lunch next to the lake! Total vertical descent of 6000ft!! Mick, Marc, Kevin, Terry, Steve, Gary, Anka and Sven, thanks for the ride!

MARIBOR

This was a weird race. The weather was great when we got here, then we got poured on for the qualifier on Saturday. It was so bad it got postponed to Sunday. The 4X did take place! Spike tires for the 4X boys! Roger did a great job making it to the mains again and finishing 3rd! He is sitting in 3rd overall at the moment, behind Jared Graves (1) and Joost Wichman (2).

Race day the weather was great again. Training started at 7am which is very unusual. Today everybody faced the fact that things can turn from good to bad very quickly. In qualifier’s Mick had a clean run but finished 12 sec behind 1st qualifier Gee Atherton. Marc came off the bike badly again. When he got to the tent he had no idea where he crashed or how he got back to the pit. He did not start in the finals. Kevin got launched of his bike as well not making the finals. (He did get a nice haircut from the crew cause of that!) The track was very intense and a lot of people struggled during the day.

In the finals Mick had another good clean run but he was still 8 seconds off of Fabien Barel who won the race! Mick said, "I don't know where he got the time from. I had a good run and could maybe push it a little bit, but 8 seconds is a lot! I'm very happy I've been consistent so far this season. This is the first time I'm not on the podium! I'm in 5th overall now, still very close to Gee and Sam!"
