GT News: Wheels of Speed
6/13/2009
Willingen, Germany
June 13-14
The GT DH team was in Willingen, Germany this past weekend for the annual Wheels of Speed event. The week started off with lots of rain and the first day of training was cancelled. On Friday the bad weather cleared out and stayed well for the weekend. It was very windy on Friday and Saturday which made the big jumps, especially on the top of the track, very tricky.
Mick Hannah qualified 2nd on Saturday just behind Gee Atherton. Marc Beaumont finished 8th and Kevin Aiello in 25th. During the finals on Sunday the wind calmed down which made it very nice for the massive German crowd. Gee won with only 0.01 of a second on Mick Hannah. Chris Kovarik got 3rd, Filip Polc 4th and Matti Lehicoinen 5th. Kevin finished 22nd (7.43 down on Gee). Marc had to take in a big crash near the bottom of the track. He got whipped over one of the jumps and came of tumbling at high speed. His helmet took about 4 big impacts! He's all scratched up but walked away from it with a light concussion! Lucky Marc!!
Check out the photo of Mick on the podium giving it to Gee for winning by 0.01"!! Mick was very happy to be so close to Gee and leaving a 1.15" gap on Kovarik.
