Hey guys, I just got back from Orlando dew tour last night, I drove down there from NC which wasn't too bad. I was going into the comp with a bit of a hurt wrist so I wasn't too excited. I rode dirt on Thursday and my wrist wasn't holding up too well. I ended up in 24th place. Saturday was park prelims and I still could hardly pump around the course, it was real annoying cause I was looking forward to this contest but couldn't even give it my all. I ended up taking it easy and took 30th place.

I went to the doctor this morning in Greenville and had some xays. Everything looks normal but it does not feel like it. I have a MRI appointment tomorrow at 4:30 to get it checked out more.

I'm flying to Cali Friday morning for the ride bmx video "Range Of Motion" premiere that I have a full section in. The premier is Friday night at the ride offices in Orange county. Then I will be in Cali for the weekend. Back home Monday and then to the doc Tuesday to see the results of the MRI. Hopefully nothing too crazy going on in there. Until then I will keep you posted!

AA Pro - Sunday: DNQ

Mike had a really tough time this weekend in Lancaster. His first straight pull wasn’t what he was hoping for, and with the track being a bit on the “easy side”, there wasn’t really anywhere for him to make up ground. He signed a ton of autographs, took a lot of pictures with the fans and even did some TV interview stuff for an upcoming BMX program. All things considered, he did a fine job representing GT Bicycles.

Bradford was not quite the JB we all are used to seeing every weekend at the BMX races. His power, his pull and his skill were there, but if he had any luck this weekend, it was all bad. He had two crashes out of his three motos on Saturday that were not his fault. Sunday he had problems keeping his shoes clipped into the pedals. He won his third moto during qualifying, but ended up tying with another rider for the last transfer spot to the semi finals and had watch from the sidelines. All in all, it was a disappointing weekend for JB.

The Big Daddy of BMX was a bit off the mark here at the ABA Golden State Nationals in Lancaster, CA. He struggled all weekend with his front straight speed and had to do most of his riding from mid pack. As race weekends go, it wasn’t bad though, as he was able to put his GT in the main events for Vet Pro and Pro Cruiser both days.
Bubba was on fire this weekend and his results sure showed it. He ripped his way to wins in three out of the four classes he entered. If it wasn’t for a crash in the 10 expert main on Saturday, he most likely would have won that as well. Looks like his wrist is doing just fine. Way to go Bub!!

Mike Day:
Elite Men: 5th

The announcer was calling the Chula Vista facility “Mike Day’s House”, as he was the winner of the only other race ever held here before… the Olympic Trials in 2008. Mike continued his winning ways here by taking first place in the time trial over current World Champion Donny Robinson and Olympic Champion Maris Strombergs. Day won every lap he was in and looked like a shoe in for the main event win. Unfortunately for Mike and all his fans, he hit the gate in the main and had to come from dead last, only to finish fifth. An impressive showing overall but a disappointing finals lap.

Joey Bradford:
Elite Men: DNQ

If Joey had any luck at all in this event, it was mostly “bad”. Like he usually does, he looked to be one of the fastest guys on the track. A crash in turn one of moto one gave him a seventh. He was winning moto two when he had a horrible crash in turn two. The crowd was just happy to see him even get up, much less watch him ride away. The crash was so bad looking, one would have thought he was gonna need an ambulance for a ride to the hospital. He actually got up there and raced moto three and finished a strong second place. Unfortunately, he had too many points and didn’t move on in the program.

Arielle Martin:
Elite Women: 3rd

Arielle feels right at home on the Chula Vista SX track and did really well at this event. She was runnin’ hot in the motos and made it to the final with a strong third in the semi. She picked lane eight for the main. She had a great start and was first or second to the first jump, but was stuck on the outside and couldn’t get over. She rode a good race and finished 3rd. Getting on the podium at any SX event is quite an accomplishment, so GREAT job and congrats to Arielle.

Eric Carter wins Mammoth Mountain DH

Team GT Bicycles was in Mammoth Mountain, CA on September 4-6 to take part in the California Golden State Mountain Bike Championships. GT's gravity ace Eric "EC" Carter and his mechanic John Canepa were both in attendance to enjoy the weekend at one of mountain biking's most influential locations of all time. There has not been a major event held at Mammoth Mountain since the 2005 U.S. National Championships, and it was great to return to such a fun venue!

Friday started with practice runs down the legendary Kamikaze DH, which has gained a reputation of being one the most wide-open, all-out, fastest downhill courses in the world. Racers have tried their luck on this unique course since the early '90's, and it's common to see speeds of 50mph+! The Kamikaze differs from most downhill courses due to the fact that it is one long fire road with no technical sections. This type of course allows riders to go fast as they wish, which depends on overall fitness and having the proper bike and gear choice. After taking a few practice runs down the course, EC realized that his 42T chainring wasn't going to be enough to allow him to gain the speed he desired. He discussed the issue with Team GT mechanic John Canepa and a large chainring was going to be mandatory to achieve a worthwhile result.

To start the mission to overcome this hurdle, EC had a 56T chainring from the '90's, that he brought with him specifically for this race. But there were many problems facing this scenario: The chainring was a 5-bolt design, whereas all cranks/chainrings nowadays are a 4-bolt design. Even if an old 5-bolt crank was used, it wouldn't match up to the wide 83mm BB width on today's DH bikes. Secondly, a chainguide would be needed to accommodate such a large gear, and most current chainguides will only accept a maximum of 44T. How could the big 56T possibly work without a compatible crank and chainguide? A little thought, fabrication, and confidence provided what was needed to tackle the job. John buckled down and got crafty with a few E-13 chainguides, a drill, some miscellaneous nuts & bolts, and the end result was a strong and reliable 56T chainring mounted on new cranks with a custom-built chainguide to ma tch. The setup fit perfectly on the GT Fury downhill machine.

Below is a youtube clip of the first official Flow Country Trail in Livigno, Italy, which I built with legendary trail builder Diddie Schneider.

Flow Country is a new term I have coined, for a purpose built mountain bike trail with lots of flow. Nothing steep nor dangerous, with small berms and rollers, predominantly downhill. This trail is designed to accommodate all skill levels and all styles of mountain bikes. In my opinion it bridges the gap between free-ride and cross country. Every town or resort worldwide should offer Flow Country trails.

This first official Flow Country trail and the concept has generated a lot of interest and support by riders and the industry who have ridden it or seen the presentation at Eurobike.

Although this year’s performance at the NBL Grands wasn’t as good as some he’s had in the past, Big Daddy had a good weekend on the track. He had close call 5th place finish in the semi final on Friday night and a good but not good enough race in the semi on Saturday night in the Masters class. In the open class on Sunday where he is allowed to race his cruiser against others on the 20’s, he grabbed the early lead with a great start and first straight. He bobbled a bit on the last straight and had to settle for 2nd overall for the day. All in all, it was a good job.

It’s been a seemingly long comeback for Bubba with the wrist injury, but he sure looks like all is now 100%. He was absolutely UNSTOPABLE this weekend in Louisville, KY at the NBL Grands. He won both 10 expert and 10 cruiser and earned the number one plate in both classes. Great job Bubba! Your 29 year-old mom must be so proud!

UCI World Championships Report

Traveling on the UCI World Cup circuit is quite a cultural experience. The GT Bicycles MTB team has the good fortune to attend these exciting international events all while taking in the local charm and sites. As diverse as the international cultures the team encounters, there is one thing in common that brings everyone at these events and it is the love of cycling. This passion for cycling and racing is what drives the world’s best mountain bikers and brings them together for the yearly UCI Mountain bike World Championships. This year the event was help in the Australian Capital city of Canberra at Stromlo Park.

GT Bicycles professional riders Mick Hannah (Australia), Mark Beaumont (United Kingdom), Kevin Aiello (USA) and Luke Madill (Australia) all made the trek to Canberra to compete against the world’s best racers in the downhill and 4X events. The riders were not the only ones who put in a great deal of preparation and training to get ready for the event - so did the mechanics and staff as they too had to ensure that everything was ready to for the race. The behind the scenes organizing is every bit as critical as the rider’s preparation. If there are no hiccups or issues surrounding the athletes it helps build their confidence instill a positive energy surrounding the team.

Training continued and a timed training session was scheduled for the downhill so the racers could review their split times to see what they needed to work on for the final and also get a glimpse at who was on top of their game leading into the finals. Mick, Marc and Kevin’s goals were to ride a fast but conservative pace so they could see where fatigue would be factors. Kevin would lay down a top-10 time in the Juniors category and Marc a top-20 time in the super-stacked Elite men’s field. Mick barreled down the course with the fastest time of the day letting everyone know what to expect out of the fast Aussie on the custom yellow GT Fury. The bright yellow GT bike was like a beacon summoning everyone within sight to come and catch a glimpse making it the premier attraction of the week with the media hovering about the bike taking hundreds of pictures and using it for the back drop for numerous video and television interviews.

On Friday evening the 4X finals were held under the lights on one of the most interesting courses of the year. The track layout lent to great spectating so the sidelines were filled with stoke-crazed Aussie fans. Luke Madill qualified in the top-10 and his early rounds were stacked with some the fastest racers in the field. His first round saw Luke snap out to an early lead only to get bucked on the doubles down the second straight causing him to veer into the chasing riders but would hold on to the qualifying spot. Back at the top of the course it was discovered that Luke had bent his derailleur hanger and when trying to straighten it broke off. A chaotic relay race would ensue with the staff rushing up a new hanger and the derailleur was quickly reinstalled getting Luke back on the gate barely in time for his second round. He would get another great start but was the victim of bad luck when his tire went flat on the second straight taking him out of contention for a World Championship. Luke is one the most genuine and nicest guys on the circuit so he took the misfortune in stride thanking everyone for helping him out.

Downhill finals were scheduled for Sunday afternoon and everyone was treated to one of the nicest days of the week with blue skies and sunshine along with mild temperatures. The mechanics checked and double checked each rider’s bike ensuring that the race machines were tuned to perfection for the most important race of the year. The riders and mechanics geared up and make their way to the top of the mountain for their start times. The Juniors dropped the hill first and GT’s SoCal ripper Kevin Aiello rolled out of the start house only to be halted by a flat early on in his run halting his chances and a medal. Next up was the “Slugger” Marc Beaumont. His run looked strong and he flowed the course well putting him 23rd. Everyone waited for Mick to come down knowing he would make a strong showing. He would cross the line with a 2:31.02 taking over the Nissan Hotseat and the lead. There were still five riders to go so anything could happen. MTB icon Steve Peat and South African Greg Minnaar would narrowly edge out Mick by .69 of the second giving Mick 3rd place on the day. Mick showed great sportsmanship in saying “I rode my best lap and was happy with it and if anyone was to beat me I wanted it to be Steve”. It was a legendary day for mountain biking.

Tonight was the Unofficial/Official Pump Track Worlds here in Canberra, Australia. The event was held in the backyard of Aussie local GarethPaton and was sponsored by a long list of industry and local businesssupporters. With $2500 up for grabs to the winner, all of the worldsfastest MTBers were in attendance. After qualifying the top-15 fastest, Mick was the 3rd fastest going into the final. Each of the finalists had to pump out six laps with no pedaling. After all of the smack talk, streaking (yes, streaking!) and hard-charging riding, GT Bicycles' Mick Hannah came out on top. Even though it was not a sanctioned event, the bragging rights and respect earned for the win mean as much as any other title event out there.

The win is a great warm up for Mick's bigger goal this weekend, UCI Downhill World Champion.

Good job Mick on the Pump Track Championship and good luck on your quest for the downhill title!

Hans Rey's 24 hours in Livigno

I recently visited Livigno with my wife Carmen, who is also a
photographer, and with my stepson Haz (16 years), to document the
perfect 24 hours in Livigno.

When we arrived on July 18th, it was right after a mid-summer snow storm
and all the mountain were still white. We started our day by riding the
Mottolino Freeride Park, the park has many new line and stunts this year
and it was fun to ride and great to show to Haz, who had never ridden
his bike in a bike park before. He had a lot of fun and even was able to
catch some air on some of the jumps. He said it was more fun than
visiting Euro-Disney. At this occasion we also shot the cover photo for
the new 2010 GT catalog.

Afterwards we packed our backpacks and rode our bikes to the Carosello
lift to catch the last ride of the day with the telecabina to the
mid-station. From there we rode our bikes to the Baitel dal Canton
mountain hut, where we spent the night. Those Baitel's or mountain huts
are super cool, everybody can sleep there, first come first serve. There
are blankets, firewood and a small hut for shelter with all the
essentials.

It was a beautiful experience, especially in the morning when we had a
nice view of the mountains and Livigno in the valley. We took advantage
of the morning light for some photos before we rode our bikes down on
the beautiful Plasgianet trail. Next stop was the Larix Adventure Park,
what a fun place that was, the tree course was challenging and super
fun, I can recommend it to everybody. By now our 24 hours where almost
over, we found a great restaurant for Pranzo in the center of Livigno,
where we enjoyed some delicious pasta, vino and gelato.

A presto

GT Bicycles Crankworx Report #1

The first couple of weeks of August are often one of the most anticipated for most gravity driven mountain bikers. At this time every year there is a mass exodus to mountains of British Columbia to Whistler. It is here that the Kokanee Crankworx Festival is held where such famous races as the Air Downhill and the Garbonzo Downhill test the worlds top MTB racers skills.

The GT Bicycles MTB team gathered in Whistler to bomb the legendary mountain and partake of all of the activities that the Crankworx Festival is famous for. In attendance were MTB legend Eric “EC” Carter, Marc Beaumont, Kevin Aiello, Andrew Cho, Tyler McCaul along with mechanics John Canepa and Mark Maurissen and team manager Steve Spencer. The festival’s low-key atmosphere is a nice break from the pressure of the World Cup races and with the huge crowds the event draws it allows the team to mingle one-on-one freely with race fans and MTB enthusiasts. A big attention grabber in the pits and on the hill was the presence of the new GT Fury downhill race bikes. Throngs of people were drawn to the attractive appearance of the full carbon framed beauty and were eager to watch it on hill.

The first event of the festival was the Dual Slalom race. The course this year was one of the most challenging ever put together for a slalom competition. The tight turns and technical jumps made for an incredible show of riding skills and speed. GT team riders Kevin Aiello and Tyler McCaul qualified their way into the Pro Finals for the “Night Show”. In the amateur division GT team manager Steve Spencer decided to try his hand at a little race action and just missed the cut by one spot to make the final.

When the finals started there were no clear favorites as everyone was riding fast. Tyler made his way past the first round of elimination by winning both rounds. Kevin won his first heat but was unable to maintain his time advantage after switching courses so had to make an early exit. Tyler was riding strong in his second round but came up short in his bid to move on through the elimination brackets. After his race Tyler said “The course was super fun to ride but as you picked up speed towards the bottom of the course you could get in to trouble in a hurry, you had to stay on your game to the line”.

On Sunday the Garbonzo Downhill was ran. The “Garbo” as the locals call it is arguably the most challenging downhill races of the year. Most elite level downhill races take on average around 3 to 4 minutes to complete but the Garbonzo pushes the riders beyond their physical limits at a staggering 15 minutes or more. A racer must know how to pace themselves so not to fatigue too early and put themselves in danger on the lower sections of the gnarly course. GT team riders weren’t the only Fury mounted riders to have all of the fun. GT ace mechanics John Canepa and Mark Maurissen, who are great riders too, got their chance to race in the amateur division of the “Garbo”. Going up against a slew of fast locals the race-wrenchers rode a great race with Marc finishing 24th and John 27th in a field of more than 70 racers. Congratulations to Mark and John on their tremendous result!

The Pro division of the Garbonzo would prove to be one of the most competitive fields ever. As the Pro start drew closer a drizzle of rain started to cover the top of the mountain. The mountain has been bone-dry over the last several weeks as the Northwest has been experiencing unseasonal hot and dry conditions so with the rain it would grease up the already slippery rocks and roots which line the steepest parts of the race course. The seasoned GT pro’s were ready for whatever the course had ready for them as their confidence never seems to diminish when on board the GT Fury. The team took their turns at the challenging mountain knowing that on this long of a course every little mistake is compounded by the length of the race. The rookie, Kevin Aiello had a good run going until a flat tire impeded his progress but still kept on the pedals to the finish. Eric Carter has been off the DH scene for a little while but adapted like the champion he is to finish out a strong run in 35th place out of more than 80 competitors. Marc Beaumont rode to a podium finish last year in the race and was looking to improve his result this year. He kept a solid line all the way to the bottom with a sub-fourteen minute time which only a couple were able to do landing him in 4th place. After the race Marc had this to say, “I always look forward to racing in the Garbonzo and was pretty pleased with my day even though I felt like I needed to stop for a lung transplant half way down the course”. Completing the Garbonzo is an accomplishment in itself so congratulations to all who raced in this incredible event.

Check back later for a follow up report on how the team happenings and results of the Air Downhill, Giant Slalom and Canadian Open Downhill.

The Mont St Anne World Cup this past last week was very exciting like usual! Team GT packed up the trailer in a record time because of the help of the full team. We drove of to Bromont, Canada on Monday morning. Tuesday everybody chilled out and went for a training ride. Quite a few people went riding in the bike park in Bromont. At a certain point we had a ‘5 wagon GT Fury train’ cruising down the trails, including myself. Thanks for the great ride Marcel Beer, Mick Hannah, John Canepa and Kevin Aiello!!

Training runs started on Thursday. Beautiful weather spoiled us after St Anne. The track is various with many serious rocky technical sections and some pedaling as well. A thunderstorm flooded the track in the evening with a non-stop drizzle rain during the night. For the qualifier on Friday we had to deal with proper rainy conditions and watery mud. Most of the riders stayed on dry tires, even on a wet track like this. There were some muddy parts where mud tires would come in handy but in general there were too many steep rock sections that required dry tires.

On the qualifier it was hard to come down without any mistakes or crashes on a track this technical especially in the wet conditions. Marc Beaumont had a good run finishing a steady 11th just in front of Mick Hannah (12th). Mick slipped a pedal and was sure he could do better in the finals. Kevin Aiello had a smooth fast run making it to a 59th, qualifying in the top 80!
4 Steve Peat
5 Gee Atherton
11 Marc Beaumont
12 Mick Hannah
59 Kevin Aiello

On Saturday the weather turned out very nice and warm. The track dried up very fast. From being wet in the morning to semi dry towards the end of training and pretty much dry for the finals. Mick had a solid run finishing 6th. He said, “I’m happy with this result. The track is short and the smallest mistake makes a difference. I had a good smooth run with no major incidents. I finished 1,6sec from Greg Minnaar, who won the race! Of course it is a shame making it that close to the podium, but I’ll be there…. Soon!” Marc said, “I’m stoked to get two good runs in on this track. I’m improving every event and feel confident on my GT Fury. I will get lots of training in next two weeks in Whistler before we head over to Australia for the Worlds.” Kevin Aiello (18) finished in a strong 48th place being the 3rd junior of the day!!
4 Gee Atherton 1078
5 Mick Hannah 929
15 Marc Beaumont 478

4X: It definitely was a different track. Let’s call it a mountain bike track where there are a lot of different possibilities to pass, different lines and surprising results. The World Cup leader Jared Graves went out in the first round. Our Swiss proud Roger Rinderknecht qualified 3rd but didn’t make it through the quarter finals. Roger commented, “The track was challenging and very different from the other World Cups. It was fun to ride but very hard to protect your line. This is racing!” Joost Wichmann had a clean run all night and won the race.

Hey Guys, I just got back from two trips. One trip was in Philly to film for my part in the Ride Magazine BMX video and then I was in Germany for a dirt comp. The Ride trip was awesome and we rode some of the best trails ever and ended up getting a lot of footage, the video is going to be really good.

The Big in Bavaria was a dirt comp in Germany and it was real fun, the weather was bad so it took a long time to get the comp over with and I ended up in 6th place. I wasn't too happy with how I rode but I’ll take it.

I head to LA tomorrow for the XGames and I am going to hit the ASA Box jump triples on my way. I’m really looking forward to X- Games and hanging out with everyone. My brother is there already and my parents fly in Wednesday then my girlfriend is coming in Friday so I have a big week planned! Hopefully everything goes awesome…Dave

UCI BMX World Championships
Adelaide, Australia
July 25 - 26, 2009
Attendance: 12,750

GT PARTICIPANTS:

Mike Day:
Elite Men: 2nd

The 2009 UCI Worlds track in Adelaide, Australia was really suited to Mike’s skill level and riding style. He waxed the comp in his heat races with impressive 1 - 1 - 1 finishes. He had strong finishes in the next three qualifiers and earned a spot in the incredibly tough Elite Men’s final. By choice he picked lane eight, the far outside, for the main and was ready to lay it down! He had a great start and had good pull but bonked the first jump a bit, which dropped him back to fifth. He moved to fourth coming out of the first turn and had his sights set on a top three. Through the tricky third straight rhythm section is where Mike really showed his magic going from fourth to second before the last turn. It had the crowd on its feet as he chased eventual winner Donnie Robinson to the line. Great Job Mike!

Joey Bradford:
Elite Men: 8th (1/8 final)

Joey seemed to be rolling stronger and stronger with every lap here at the 2009 Worlds. He easily made it through the heat races and was raring to go in the 1/8 final. With a good start, he looked to be a solid qualifier for the next round. That is until a horrible mishap in turn two put out for the rest of the event. He accidentally bumped elbows with Augusto Castro and both riders ended up on the ground and done for the day.

Arielle Martin:
Elite Women: 3rd

After winning the women’s pro class both days at the last event in Salt Lake City, Arielle was looking to keep the ball rolling. She started off a bit wobbly here in Australia but pulled it together just in time to make the Elite Women’s main event. In the main she rode strongly and aggressively and ended her lap in the number three spot. A very respectable third place podium spot at the Worlds is awesome! Way to go Arielle.

Eric Rupe:
45 & Over Cruiser:

Big Daddy came to Adelaide, Australia looking for his fifth UCI World Title in a row. The track at this years’ World Championships was exceptionally tricky and technical. Eric was the only one in his class that was jumping the two big jumps down the front straight and that was all he seemed to need to pull nice sized leads heading into turn one on each lap he did. He was able to win every lap from the motos, all the way through the main event, to win another World Championship. Way to go Rupe!

GT Bicycles UCI World Cup Report –
Mont St Anne, Canada July 25th 2009

Once again the GT Bicycles MTB team assembled to stake its claim amongst the cycling elite. The UCI World Cup MTB series kicked back into gear after a four week break and headed over to the legendary venue of Mont St Anne, Canada. The Mont St Anne course is a favorite of most of the racers with its long high speed drops and technical tree and rock sections. The track is also one of the longest of the season with times averaging close to five minutes so fitness plays a big role in the results. Plus getting time on the course gives the athletes a preview to what they can expect for the 2010 UCI World Championships as the will be Mont St Anne.

The weather changed daily if not hourly so had all of the gravity racers swapping tire set ups in hopes to get the right combination to stick their lines on the fast gnarly course. The GT team of Mick Hannah (AUS), Marc Beaumont (GBR), Kevin Aiello (USA) and Roger Rinderknecht (SWI) were all feeling strong for their races and with the help of two of the best mechanics in the business in Mark Maurissen (BEL) and Terry Chanethomvong (FRA) they dialed in.

The DH and 4X events got bumped up in the scheduling so it meant that qualifying would run on Friday and Finals on Saturday. The team got in a lot of quality time in training to figure out their lines but the weather would always keep them thinking. The weather held out for qualifying with only a little mist dusting the course on top. Mick made a solid run by qualifying 9th. After his run Mick stated “I felt like I was in a training run and could have went harder”. With that said Mick knew he had more in the tank for his Finals run. Marc would cruise in to the number 15 spot locking his spot to the Finals. Kevin wouldn’t be so lucky as he had a few mistakes that pushed back his time to keep him out of the top-80 qualifiers. Roger is a favorite amongst the 4X crowd and is always a challenger for the top of the podium. He secured himself a slot in the finals with a 7th place qualifier.

The DH final started under gloomy skies but the rain never came. The UCI does a great job at the World Cup venues to make the races more spectator friendly. They bring in a large jumbotron screen and have cameras positioned along the course so everyone at the bottom can see nearly the entire run of each rider. As Marc was making his run the announcers got excited when the first split time was posted and Marc had a significant lead. Marc would cross the line with nearly a 2 second advantage and would take over the Nissan Hot Seat. Marc would hold the seat for several riders but would eventually be bumped out. Mick came down soon after making his charge at a top slot on his 2009 GT Fury. He would just miss out and would end up in 7th place overall for the day and Marc would get a 15th.

The 4X Finals were able to sneak in before the rain also. The course is probably one of the best in a while with a good mix of true MTB flare with rocks and off camber turns along with big jumps. A pretty deep field of competitors would have their work cut out for them. Roger raced in his typical fashion by putting in solid laps in all of his qualifiers winning all of his races going into the final. The final would be a tough one with current < Jared Graves, 2008 World Champion Rafael Alvarez de Lara Lucas and Thomas Slavik. Roger got a great start on his GT Zaskar battling with Graves for the lead into the first turn. As Roger settled into 2nd into turn two Alvarez came underneath putting Roger on the ground. Roger shook it off and cruised in for a 4th keeping his podium consistency and in the running for a top spot in the overall standings.

The team now heads over to Bromont, Canada for the next UCI World Cup round then over to the Kokanee Crankworx Festival..
.
GT Bicycles is proud to be supported by:
SRAM, Kenda, Champion System, Mavic wheels, UFO, SDG, Funn and e.thirteen.

All Girls BMX Clinic

We had a great clinic this week at North SeaTac BMX. So far these All-Girls clinics have been a big success in my book - not calculated by total numbers or cash payout so much as the improvement in the girls themselves. I have discovered that the girls tend to push their skills a little more without the pressure of boys watching and heckling them. It’s impressive to watch them learn to manual and jump without anything holding them back all they need is a little coaxing in the right environment.

This week’s clinic had 15 girls ranging from 6 yr-old Lauren who’s dad just bought her a fresh GT Mini and sent her off to me having never gone down a BMX start to 15 year-old Jiovonn who has been racing for awhile. Local pro Brittany Bates helped me out with kid control, the SeaTac staff was out in full force dialing in the track and Seattle gave us plenty of sun for the two day camp so it was hard not to have a good time. I really focused this group on getting over their fears of manualing and jumping as well as being aggressive in corners, something I don’t see enough of in the younger generations. I am very proud to say that we saw a few diggers as some of the girls finally loose and blasted each other trying to pass. By the end of the second day I couldn't get little Lauren off her bike to take a drink, she just wanted to keep charging like the energizer bunny with a brand new battery. 11 year-olds Kelsey and Kiolani impressed me big time learning triple-manuals and doubling through the rhythm (I’ve never seen that in girls so young), and 15 yr-old Jiovann was trying to take me out in pump races. It’s so gratifying to see such improvement in so little time, all most girls need is a little encouragement and understanding that they can still be a girl and ride like a boy.

GT came through big with t-shirts for the girls, Cytomax threw in some bottles plus some stickers from FLY and GO211. All the girls were super psyched on it, special thanks to my sponsors for pitching in to the girls’ development program. I've had lots of requests to start doing more of these in the future so keep your eyes out for the next All Girls Clinic.
