With a blistering time of 4 minutes, 28.6 seconds, GT/Hyundai MTB rider Flyin? Brian Lopes took third on his GT ID-XC at the Redbull Road Rage time trial and showed that his nickname rings true ? no matter where he?s racing.
Lopes? third-place finish at the invitation-only race brought Brian a thousand bucks and the respect and admiration of his peers.
The 2.5-mile all-downhill, all-the-time course dropped more than 2,000 feet through the twisty Tuna Canyon in Malibu, California. Racers hit speeds near 60 miles per hour.
?It was a cool event and I would have liked to win, but looking back at the situation now I think I did pretty good considering I was on a full- suspension ID-XC GT mountain bike with 32 CC tires and the fact that I only weigh 160lbs.,? said Lopes. His time was only four seconds behind the first place. ?The first two finishers were both on road bikes with skinny tires which was definitely an advantage up top and at the bottom where there was a lot of pedaling. They also both weighed in the 180 to 200lb. range which definitely helps when you are coasting. They went 57 and 58mph through the speed trap and I only went 53mph, so I must of killed them in the more technical turns throughout the entire middle section of the course.?
The event?s Time Trials pitted individuals against the clock as they raced for the title of fastest descender. For the Pack Races, the top 16 finishers from the time trials raced boardercross-style in four-man heats.
OLN commentator and 2005 Tour De France host Bob Roll emceed the event.
