GT Team Finishes Up SX Season In Canada

UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Final
September 14-15, 2012, Abbotsford Canada -- To quote the old saying “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades” it would have been nice if GT Bicycles’ Felicia Stancil was participating in one of those activities when her close-to-winning run came up short this weekend at the UCI BMX SX World Cup in Abbotsford, Canada.
Flyin’ Felicia, the 17-year-old phenom from Illinois, was having one of the best races of her young career battling against the worlds best female BMX racers. She qualified 2nd in the Time Trial and nearly went undefeated through all of the qualifying rounds. The final is always a mental test to see who can put together the best start and smoothest lap and it appeared Felicia had it all. She popped out of the gate and pulled to the front on the rest of the field. Down the second straight she continued to pull away and looked to be running away with it. As Felicia was maneuvering her way down the technical third straight rhythm section she bumped to top of one of the jumps and threw her off balance causing her to drift to the left side of the jumps. The bike kept going left and she tried to go right until the bike slid out from underneath her. Her first World Cup win slipped from her fingers as she lay on the ground and watched her competitors race on by.
As heartbreaking as it was Felicia took the mishap in stride knowing that she was beating the world's best racers and that she has a long career ahead of her and many more chances to come to prove herself. She is a trooper and will be back even faster at the UCI SX opener in Manchester England next April.
Along with Felicia, teammates Mike Day and Corben Sharrah had their share of disappointments in Canada. Both rode great in the time trials making the Super Time Trial Final setting them up for good gate selections during qualifying.
Fan-favorite Mike Day was showing his track savvy and was working the pack throughout the event. He pulled a tough quarterfinal heat where he needed to finish in the top four. Going nearly 8-wide into the first turn put Mike on the outside and just as he was charging the jumps of the second straight, a competitor stopped in front of him ending Mike’s day. Mike will be back for 2013 and will be ready to race for the top of the podium.
GT’s team young gun Corben Sharrah had the crowd and the racers all talking about him being the potential spoiler as he was riding fast and confident. Undefeated through qualifying he made it to quarters then to the semi final. In what was one of the weirdest incidents of the weekend Corben would find himself body surfing down the massive starting hill after an “over the bars” moment second pedal out of the gate. Tough to say what happened, but Corben came away unscathed. Look for him to get back on it to finish out the year on the USABMX circuit.
Next up for the GT Bicycles team will be the USABMX Disney Cup in Orlando, Florida, October 26-28.
