GT PARTICIPANTS:

Mike Day:

Time Trial: 1st

Elite Men: 5th (semi)

As hot as Mike Day has been lately, it was just a matter of time before things didn’t go so well and unfortunately, France was it. He was blazing fast as usual in practice AND AS USUAL, he looked like the guy to beat. As predicted, he won the time trial and was ready for yet another victory. He won his quarter final and was ready for the semis. That’s where the hot streak ended, as Mike finished a disappointing fifth overall. Even with the fifth in the semi final, Mike was able to end the year in the number five spot in the UCI SX World Standings.

Joey Bradford:

Time Trial: 14th

Elite Men: 8th (quarter final)

Joey was really excited to be in France at the SX and had high hopes of finishing on the podium. He seemed to have the track pretty dialed and felt confident heading to the time trial. He had a couple of really solid laps in the time trial and rode well enough to finish in the number fourteen position. He was still blazing fast in the motos, but in the quarter finals is where his day ended. He had a few bad luck things happen during the quarters and it was enough to keep him out of the semi finals.

Randy Stumpfhauser:

AA Pro Saturday:2nd

AA Pro Sunday: 4th

After a month off break since winning the NBL Elite Men’s Title, Stumpy was ready to bit of ABA racing this weekend in Lancaster, CA. He was really looking like he was the guy to beat on Saturday. Just as the mains began, it started to rain, so it would be one slippery dash lap for the cash. He slipped and squirted all the way down the front straight and found himself in the back of the pack in turn one. That’s when the mayhem insued. He made a really good move to avoid the carnage and went quickly to second. He tried to run down the race leader, Danny Caluag –Intense Bikes, but he came just short at the line. The finish was so close, that they had to check the video to see who actually got the win. As he has already done a few times in 2008 and has done MANY times in his career, he stepped it up a bit more on Sunday. In the mains, he had more good gate starts and was riding really well. Heading into the third round, he was the low points leader. He’d still have to be right in there in round three to get the overall win. It wasn’t meant to be, as he got squeezed by the other riders coming out of the gate and was in dead last coming out of turn one. He made up some ground, but on this tight track, it was nearly impossible to move up far enough. A sixth place finish was only good enough to net him fourth for the day. All in all, it was a good weekend for GT and Stumpfhauser.

Mike Day:

Saturday:$10,000 Olympic Bonus

Mike didn’t race this weekend, due to a bad sinus cold and the fact that he was leaving Monday morning for a UCI SX race in France. He was on hand to be recognized by the ABA for his recent Olympic accomplishment and to be awarded a bonus check for $10,000. He signed TONS of autographs and was even put on the mic in the middle of the infield to share his Olympic story with the crown. He was really well received and represented GT with flying colors!! Nice job Mike!!

Eric Rupe:

Vet Pro Saturday: 6th

Pro Cruiser: 5th

Vet Pro Sunday: 6th

Pro Cruiser: 4th

Big Daddy has been a having a tough go of it, trying to come back from injury this year, but as of late, he’s made some solid progress. This past weekend at the ABA So Cal Nationals in Lancaster, CA was his best outing so far in 2008. He rode well enough to make the Vet Pro mains each day, which these days, is no easy feat. He also was in the Pro Cruiser mains each day and THAT is pretty cool. On the gate was the 45 year old Rupe and the rest of the pack were AA Pro riders. He managed a fifth on Saturday and an even better fourth on Sunday. Good job Big Daddy.

The GT BMX race team—Randy Stumpfhauser, Mike Day, and Eric Rupe--was in the Lancaster, CA this week for the ABA So Cal Nationals and paid a visit today to The Block Shop. The shop visit was the best visit so far in 2008, as Rich Bartlett, the shop owner and manager for over 5 years, showed the GT guys what a truly pro looking BMX shop is all about.

The GT guys had a chance to meet a lot of customers who showed up for the widely publicized GT Promo. Rich had the event promo’d all week on the local alternative rock station “100.1 The Edge”. The multiple promo spots during the week, announced the visit of Eric, Randy and Mike, brought quite a few listeners out to meet the pros. The station had a live feed right from the shop from 3pm til 6pm. Eric, Randy and Mike all did live interviews with “Fat Head” the DJ that went really well. Both the shop and GT got really good plugs from the radio spots.

Both Mike and Randy also did news paper interviews as well. The GT guys gave the fans autographed team posters, some GT stickers and GT bike catalogs. Stumpfhauser, Day, and Rupe even had their personal race bikes on hand to show off to the fans. The visit was a total success. Thanks Rich!
Was real fun. I was stoked because End Search won Video of the Year.
It was the first year Nora Cup had that award, so it was awesome to be
a part of that. I checked out the new GT line, and it was looking tip
top! I heard a lot of good things about it too.
Right now I'm in Cali. Two of my friends passed away in a plane crash a week ago, so I'm out here for their funeral.

Star Crossed/ Rad Racing GP Race Report:

This weekend the domestic Cyclocross season kicked off in Seattle, WA with two races. Star Crossed was first up on Saturday night under the lights at the Marymore Velodrome followed by the Rad Racing GP on Sunday in Tacoma.

I was able to stay at home Friday night since Star Crossed didn't start until 8:00 pm Saturday night. Things were going smooth until I started feeling a little queasy halfway through the trip. By the time I got to the hotel I had the full on stomach bug going on. I spent the night in the bathroom throwing up and didn't even make it out of the hotel until Sunday afternoon.

This was not the way I was hoping to transition into the Cyclocross season but you don't always have control over things like that. I tried to change my ticket to get back home on Sunday but all the flights were full and since I wasn't puking anymore I decided to see if I could race.

I did a short warm up and I knew the race was going to be one of attrition for me. The GP has the longest run up we do all year and since this was my first cross race I hadn't been doing much running. I managed to finish the just inside the top ten. That is much better then I thought I would do and I was just happy to get out of the hotel room and be done throwing up.

Next up is Cross Vegas in two days. Hopefully I can recover quickly and be ready to go for the race in the desert.

Thanks for your support....

This past weekend we put a bookend on the 2008 World Cup season in Schladming, Austria. If you have never been to this World Cup you may remember seeing it on Off Road to Athens. It was the race everyone took two pedal strokes and jumped off their bike to run up the mountain since it was muddy and un-rideable. They have done a lot of work since 2004 and the course now is much better even when it’s wet.

The forecast for the weekend was a high of 6 C and rain/snow on Sunday. We were all prepared for the worst but aside from being cold it was dry and fast. The course is only like four K so we do eight laps. I think this course is the steepest we race all year and doing three climbs per lap eight times really adds up. The course winds through the middle of Schladming proper complete with stair drops, medal barricades, huge fly over bridges plenty of gravely road corners.

I had great legs and rode in the main chase group for most of the race until fading at the end. I managed to hang on for eleventh, which was good enough for tenth overall. That is my best World Cup Overall finish ever and this has been my best international season by far.

I want to thank all of you for your support and a great season. I’m proud to represent you and glad we could finish the mountain bike season strong. You might think I am going to enjoy some time at home now that the season is over and frequent flyer account has 90,000 miles in it so far this year. Nope, cyclocross starts this weekend and I’m hoping parlay my awesome mountain bike season into some cross success.

Thanks again,
Elite Men Final: 2nd

Like we said in our last team race re[port, when you’re on a roll, you’re on a roll and Mike Day is really on a roll. Mike came into Salt Lake really pumped on his performance in China at the Olympics and then his win last week in Canada and was now looking for another great performance here in Salt Lake. He had the track down and like he usually does, he looked like the man to beat come main event time. He took a convincing win in the time trial, just like he did at this event last year, and was set for the main. The main was filled with more American riders than ever before at one of these races and looked like it would be a good one. Gate slams down and it’s Mike Day and fellow USA Olympian Kyle Bennett (Free Agent) to the front by a hair. As the two diced it out in turn one for the lead, they both had the move put on them by USA amateur racer Nic Long (Phantom / Intense). Mike did his best to chase him down and get the lead back, but Nic was just “on it” and Mike would have to settle for second. Good Job Mike!

Joey Bradford:
Elite Men Time Trial: 11th
Elite Men: 5th (semi final)

After having an impressive performance at last months NBL Grands, Joey was here in Salt Lake to try his hand at some UCI SX racing. He looked good, rode with confidence and when asked how he thought he’d do, all Joey had to say was, “I’m ready”. He finished the time trial in a strong and respectable eleventh position. This is really good when you consider how fast the other 35 to 40 racers are. He had a good finish in his quarter final and set for the semi. Unfortunately for Joey, this is where his day would end. During the semi, he tangled with another rider that was pretty much the end of it. On tracks like these, when you lose momentum and can’t smoothly clear the jumps, you gotta shut it down. We’re proud of Joey and look forward to wins in the future.

See GT’s Randy Stumpfhauser, Mike Day, Joey Bradford and Big Daddy Rupe next in Lancaster, California at the ABA So Cal Nationals, October 3 & 5, 2008.

2008 has been an exciting and historic year for BMX racing as the world got to experience the sport for the first time on the Olympic stage in Beijing. A proud part of the excitement and history is GT Bicycles’ Mike Day. After his silver medal performance in Beijing Mike was on a media whirlwind doing interviews and appearances equaling no time for training and riding his bike. With everything going on he still showed in Canada for the ERA Flats-Only race and won it. Now Mike along with his GT teammate Joey Bradford find themselves in Salt Lake City Utah for the fourth round of the UCI SX series which is held in conjunction with the AST Dew Tour.

Last years event in Salt Lake was plagued by rain on the final day but this year the weekend was picture perfect with temperatures in the 80’s and sunshine. The time trial was held on Friday and forty-five of the fastest BMX racers in the world took turns to see who could turn the fastest lap times in hopes of earning a top spot qualifying them into the top-32. Mike and Joey made their attempts to qualify speeding around the track that had jumps as long as 45 feet. Once everyone had taken their two attempts Joey would land himself in the 9th spot and Mike took the pole position with the fastest time earning him a fancy Swatch watch for his accomplishment.

With the time trial win it gave Mike first gate selection in the quarter final heats and with Joey’s solid performance it gave him the third gate selection in his heat. After each of the three quarter final heats Mike gained momentum as he handily won each race. Joey would some battles on the track but would prevail with some good finishes moving him on to the semi final. Mike would continue his domination by winning his semi final setting him up for the main event. Joey wouldn’t fare as well as he was pushed high in the first turn and get stuck in the soft dirt causing him to go down. Joey is a tough competitor and wont let the bout with bad luck get him down. Most forget that Joey is only 18 and still has a long career ahead of him and has already accomplished more than most of his competitors.

Staging up for the finals all eyes were on Mike as he had his two US Olympic teammates Kyle Bennett and Donny Robinson positioned in the gate next to him. The gate dropped and Mike would find himself battling with Kyle down the first straight. As the dove into the first turn their tight inside line would push them up high opening up the inside line for Nic Long to dive underneath with momentum. Mike would get back on pedals chasing down Nic but the tight and short track would run out on Mike but he would earn a hard fought 2nd followed by Donny Robinson in 3rd.

Elite Men Time Trial: 5th
Elite Men Final: 7th

After Stumpy smoked the competition last weekend at the NBL Grands, he was ready to do the same here in Canada at the inaugural ERA Kingston Cup. With the huge pro purse being offered, you can bet that every rider in the field would be riding on the edge trying to get to the front of every moto. Randy did really well in the time trial, as he ended up finishing fifth out of over 30 riders. He blazed through the motos and semi finals and was ready to lay it down in the main. With one lap for the money, it was go time and Randy was amped and ready. Unfortunately for the newly crowned NBL Elite Men’s Champion, Randy had a bit of an early gate start, hitting it just a bit as it fell and pretty much put him in the back of the pack right away. Try as he did, it just wasn’t in the cards for him to do any better than he did. All in all, just making the main was a great accomplishment and we at GT are still WAY proud to say Stumpfhauser rides a GT.

Mike Day:
Elite Men Time Trial: 13th
Elite Men Final: 1st

First the Olympic silver medal, now first place at the ERA Kingston Cup! In the words of Mugatu, “that Mike Day is so HOT right now”. Mike looked really good in practice and was an easy pick to win the time trial AND the main event. Unfortunately for Mike, in both runs of the time trial, he badly bonked the same jump and killed his chances for the win. Being the skilled rider and mental giant that he is, he regrouped and turned it on for the motos and semi finals and was ready for the main. When you’re hot, you’re hot and when that gate dropped in the main, Mike was flat out gone. He won from wire to wire with a smooth and flawless lap. He makes it look so easy, but if you’ve ever ridden or raced a BMX bike, you KNOW it isn’t. For his efforts, he earned a nice, fat $10,000 check. No doubt it was the single biggest payday in BMX for 2008. Congrats Mike and keep the ball rolling.

Round # 6 of the UCI World Cup downhill series dropped south of the equator to the land down under, Australia. It was a homecoming of sorts for GT Bicycles factory downhill pilot Bryn Atkinson as he was born in the host city of Canberra and now lives only a few hours away by the Blue Mountains. Canberrra is quite the contrast from the beaches of Sydney as it is a dry hi-desert landscape about 200 kilometers from the coast plus it was winter time making for some pretty cool temperatures.

Bryn has been nursing some sore ribs since injuring them at the World Cup in Bromont Canada so his participation was questionable coming into the event. The trooper he is, Bryn wrapped up his ribs and put in a few training runs to test his pain threshold and the result was good. The Canberra course was a little on the short side with a bit of pedaling towards the bottom of the course so the technical skill was important but not as much as the fitness to charge the flat finish section.

As the race day came rain was forecasted but all of the locals insured us “it doesn’t rain here… ever!” But low and behold as we woke up on Sunday morning… RAIN! Not a torrential down pour but a pretty steady rain that could be a factor in how the course was attacked. Bryn warmed up for his semi final run with his ever present smile and positive attitude while GT mechanic Mark Maurissen performed his prerace magic on Bryn’s 2009 DHi Team. The rain kept coming as the semi’s started and Bryn didn’t let it distract him as he blazed down the Mount Stromlo course to qualify in 10th. The result was a good one for Bryn being that he had trouble breathing due to his sore ribs.

The rain kept coming and the course started to become more difficult. The flat sections of the track started to get boggy meaning that fitness would be a factor for all. The finals had a solid group of competitors with a strong contingent of local Aussies who had the course dialed so no one could be counted out.

Bryn rolled into the start house knowing that he could give the run more of an effort and improve on his semi final time. He powered his way down the mountain side hitting each section with reckless abandon as his teammates an friends watched on the jumbo screen at the finish line. He was riding like he had something to prove and in a way he did after battling with injuries and some bad luck. Not only did he have to finish the race but he needed to do so with top time to get him back on track. As cranked to the finish his time was looking to be good. The last couple hundred meters leading to the finish was getting soupier and slicker and it was taking its toll on most of the competitors and would separate out the field. Bryn crossed the line with a time that came close to putting him in the Nissan Hotseat but came up short. Bryn sat on the sidelines watching the remaining racers make their run at the top spots. After everything was said and done Bryn held on to 9th place overall which is the best result he has had this season at a World Cup. The solid finish fueled Bryn’s motivation as he looks forward to the next World Cup in Schladming Austria in two weeks

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to the gang at Monza for helping out in Canberra! Stephen Robinson, Mog and the SRAM boys are a top notch crew and went the extra mile and beyond to make sure the GT Team was taken care of.

What a weekend, The crowds that showed up in Canberra would rival Scotland World Cup crowd for their enthusiasm towards Mountain biking. I have honestly never experienced anything like the crowd during Saturday practice, They were so wild, It felt like a race run with everyone cheering, and we weren't even racing yet! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! The World Champs here next year are going to be Nuts!

Surprise surprise, it rained on race day, it's so funny, no matter where we go on planet Earth, whenever there is a World Cup, there is rain. It had not rained in Canberra in like 5 months, so weird. The rain didn't really have any negative effects on the track because it was so dry and dusty, but the grueling 30 second flat sprint to the finish, was pretty sloppy and boggy, so it made it all the more brutal.

It has been 4 weeks since I tore the cartilage between my ribs in Canada, and I went out for a test ride on Wednesday afternoon to see if i could handle it, I wrapped my chest up in an elastic bandage, and it was manageable. I did minimal practice during the week, skipping the first day, and only doing 5 runs before the race. (usually I like to do at least 10-12 practice runs to be race ready.)

I put in a pretty chilled run for qualifying, Qualifying 10th, but had trouble breathing at the end with my chest all wrapped up, so decided to unwrap for the final. I had a Pinned run going, but kinda just ran out of puff on the last straight. I finished 9th, I'm really happy, cause it has been a while and plus, I was only 1 second off podium. This year has been crazy, and it was nice to be able to put on a show in front of a home crowd.

Steven Robinson and Mog from GT Australia had a sweet set-up for us, Spencer and Mark got us dialed in and did a great job, It was smooth sailing. Off to Austria next week, for the World Cup finals.

See ya'

GT PARTICIPANTS:

Randy Stumpfhauser:
Elite Men Friday: 1st
Elite Men Grands: 1st

Stumpy came into the Grands weekend only seven points out of the lead for the Elite Men’s Year End Title. What he needed to do was win the Friday event and then win the Grands main event. If he could do it, he’d have the second NBL Elite Men’s Title of his career. As he usually does, Randy was out front in nearly every moto he was in. The main event on Friday was a walk-away for him, as he really took it to ‘em wire to wire. After that main event, he had a very slim ONE point lead before the Grands event. The pressure was really on come Saturday night’s Grands main, as Randy needed to finish ahead of one of BMX’s fastest riders, Cristian Becerine (Free Agent). The two had a few good battles in the heat races and were both ready for the final. When the gate fell, it was all Randy Stumpfhauser. He led from wire to wire, but had a brief challenge from Becerine coming out of the last turn. At that point, Randy just put the hammer down and the threat was quickly extinguished. It was a really sweet victory as he won his second NBL Elite Men’s Year End Championship Title. Congrats Randy! U Da Man!!!

Joey Bradford:
Elite Men Friday: 6th
Elite Men Grands: 5th

Joey looked really good this weekend here in Louisville. He has had good success here as an amateur and hopes to equal that as a pro. He did well in the heat races while doing his E.T. pedaling through the pro section. He made the main event at the Friday night national AND at the Saturday night NBL Grands. He was disappointed to say the least, as he finished 6th on Friday and 5th on Saturday. Joey really puts in the hard work and it shows. He’s right on the edge of being where he wants to be, so he’ll keep at it and you can rest assured, he’ll be a solid threat for the win at any event real soon. Good job Joey. We’re proud of you.

Eric Rupe:
Elite Masters Friday: DNQ
Elite Masters Grands: 4th
Masters Open Grands: 5th

Big Daddy has had incredible success here in Louisville over the years. He won the Elite Men’s Year End Title here in 1984, finished 2nd in the Elite Men’s main event in 1984, 1985, 1986 & 1987. He won the Pro Cruiser Title here in 1987 & 1988, while winning the main in that class in 1988 & 1989. He won the Vet Pro Year End Title here in 1996 as well as 2004 and won the main in that class in 1996. He won the Single A-Pro Year End Title and the main event in 2000. He won the Single A-Pro Cruiser Year End Title and main event in 2002. Needless to say, his pro class success at the NBL Grands is second to none. At 45 years young, racing the Masters class against guys 15 years his junior is a real challenge. He did well at the Grands event by making the tough main event and even finished 4th for the day. He got a solid 5th in the 30 & Over Open main on Sunday, but wasn’t really thrilled with his run. It was still a very respectable performance to say the least. Nice job Big Daddy.
