Mike hasn’t raced since the ABA Grands back in November, in an effort to let his ailing back heal up. Unfortunately for the 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist, he’s still not quite ready to go, and it showed this weekend in Phoenix. This has always been one of Mike’s favorite places to race, and he was really looking forward to lighting it up here. He’ll be better soon and putting his GT Speed Series on top of the podium.

Joey has had his ups and downs so far in 2010. He’s been straight killin it in Pro Cruiser, winning five out of the first six events. This weekend would be his roughest one yet though. He had a crash in the AA Pro ¼ final on Saturday that took him out of the running, as well as a huge crash in the Pro Cruiser main, while winning it on Saturday night. His results on Sunday weren’t much better, as the sloppy wet conditions didn’t help his efforts. Look for Joey to be on fire at the next event in DeSoto, TX for the USAC National Championships. Last year he was in position to win that event on all three days of racing!

Big Daddy has had a pretty tough go of it so far in 2010 in the Vet Pro class. He represents well and seems to go well in practice, but it’s just not clicking for him when race time roles around. Good thing the veteran of the sport can still turn it on in the Pro Cruiser class. He’s been in every Pro Cruiser main so far this year. Not too bad for a guy who’s 27 years older than some of his competitors. WHAT !

GT BMX race team riders Joey Bradford and Eric Rupe made a shop visit this week to Bicycle Bananas in Reno, NV. The shop was happy to have the guys stop in to say hi, sign autographs, hand out stickers and just hang out. Bicycle Bananas is a long standing Reno shop, that’s way cool and has a really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Both Bradford and Big Daddy Rupe had their personal race bikes on hand to show off and let people see just how cool the 2010 line of GT BMX race bikes is. The visit was a real success, and the team looks forward to visiting more GT dealers this season. Thanks to Joe Gomes, the GT area rep, for helping the team at the shop and supporting GT bicycles.

Joey is off to an amazing start in 2010 in the Pro Cruiser standings. In the first six events, he has taken his Power Series Two Four five wins. Those wins were all done in convincing fashion as well. He’s now sitting on quite a nice point lead for the national championship. It’s a long season, but so far so good for Bradford and GT.
Hey Guys,

Just got done with a busy few weeks. I went to Perth which is on the other side of Australia from where I am. It was a fun chill trip, I got back Thursday then went to a big music festival called Sound Wave on Saturday where a bunch of good bands played.

Sunday I went to a local dirt comp put on by the council. A lot of people turned out for the event including Colin Mackay, Ryan Guetler, Dane Searls, and Cam Pianta. The jumps were not in the best shape but everyone made do and I qualified into the 7 man final in 6th. The final was 2 runs best run counted so it was all or nothing.

After the first runs were done I was sitting in second behind Colin Mackay. My second run was a bit better than my first. I did a 3 whip to x on the first, 3 flattie the second then 3 no hander the 3rd. It wasn't enough to catch Colin but I ended up holding on to the second spot for the rest of the comp. I plan on getting out this week and trying to film some stuff for my upcoming demolition parts section.

Cheers

Dave

Race Report: The New Mob

This past weekend I attended the "New Mob" race in Boulder City, Nevada, racing pro downhill. I arrived to another weekend of great weather, a phenominal track, and great racing, with a best of two run format.

My practice runs were a little frustrating as I flatted multiple times on the sharp rocks of Bootleg, Canyon. So I ramped my tire pressure up to 50 psi and went with the set it and forget it method and didn't have to stress on flats.

After getting a few more clean practice runs in, I was ready to put together a solid racerun. I have had a frustrating streak of unfinished race runs recently due to mechanicals, punctures, and crashes, so I was concentrating on putting a run together and finishing a finals run.

My first run was going well until I hit a jump, and got blown off track in the air. Sitting in 4th after the first run, I knew what I had to do to improve on my first runs time.

Run 2 went well as I hit all my lines and took 8 seconds off my first run. I finished in third place overall.

The pro podium consisted of Mitch Ropelato in first (specialized), Logan Binggeli in second (KHS), Me in third, David K in fourth (intense/ ODI), and Chris Heath in fifth (KHS).Overall it was an awesome weekend of racing with a stacked feild of riders and one of the best tracks I have ever ridden.

I would like to thank all my sponsors for their continued support including GT Bikes, Twenty Six Products, Troy Lee Designs, Oakley, FiveTen Shoes, EFX, ODI grips, Freestyle watches, Obtanium Springs, Cadence Works

ESCADARIA DE SANTOS - DOWNHILL URBAN
This weekend I came down for an urban race in Brazil. I was expecting something somewhat mellow like Lisbon downtown but after walking it I was a little nervous. This course is steep and fast with some big stair drops. At first it felt like a bit of a huck-course, but as we got up to speed it became more and more fun. Bikes were being destroyed everywhere. It was the ultimate test for the full-carbon GT FURY and it came out on top by far. I think I was the only rider to get through the weekend without a single problem.

The main Brazilian competition was Wallace Miranda. He has won the event 5-times including a win against urban DH standout Cedric Gracia. Friday was mellow with walking inspection and two runs. Then Saturday it was open timed training for most of the day. With 120 riders and only the top ten going to Sunday there was a little carnage in that session. As far as I know nobody was seriously hurt, but the ambulance was a little busy.

Wallace was on top of the leader board for most of the day. Then with our last runs I put down the fastest time and Filip Polc went into second just a little ahead of Wallace.

Sunday morning the program was one practice run then a semi final with the top-10 then a final with the top 5. It was a tight schedule with a fast turnaround for the live tv which was seen by millions of viewers.

After the semi final I was 3rd with Polc 2nd and Wallace 1st. Then in the final I had an ok run. I came down with the fastest time of the day. I was aiming for a low 59 second run, but I got 1:00.15. The Polc had a wild run pushing a little harder than I was comfortable with and put don the low 59 I was hoping for. Then it was up to Wallace and he had another good clean run as he had done all weekend and came into 3rd with a 1:00.2.

Now it's time to put my head down and focus on training for the world cup. The next race planned for me is the Sea Otter Classic.

A big thank you to the great organizers of the event for their hospitality and to GT Bicycles and all of my supportive sponsors.

Mike Day:

AA Pro - R.O.C.: 4th

AA Pro - Grands: 5th (semi)

Mike has been dealing with lower back problems for the past few months, and it’s really been affecting his ability to train and prepare for racing. He came to the Grands simply looking to roll the dice, do his best and see how it goes. He actually did pretty well, all things considered. A solid fourth place finish at the Race of Champions event on Friday and a fifth place in the AA Pro semi on Sunday at the Grands were what he had to show for his efforts. Get better Mike and we’ll see you in the winner’s circle soon.

Joey Bradford:

AA Pro - R.O.C.: 5th (semi)

AA Pro - Grands: DNQ

Joey was as fast here in Tulsa as he has been all year, but unfortunately, things just didn’t go very well for him. In both the Race of Champions event on Friday night and the Grands event, he wasn’t able to transfer to the finals. Don’t let the disappointing results fool ya, as you can bet that he’ll be putting his GT on the podium again soon.

Eric Rupe:

Vet Pro – R.O.C.: DNQ
Pro Cruiser – R.O.C.: DNQ

Vet Pro - Grands: DNQ
Pro Cruiser - Grands: DNQ

It was super frustrating and disappointing weekend for Big Daddy here at the 2009 ABA Grands. He failed to transfer out of the motos in any of the classes he entered. Though he came into the Grands sitting in the number five spot in national points for Pro Cruiser and in the number 8 spot in Vet Pro, he had to sit and watch the main events from the side lines. The 46 year old legendary BMX racer still managed to end the season with number six in Pro cruiser and number 7 in Vet Pro. Nice.

Bubba Gonzales:

10x – Grands: 4th
10 cru – Grands: 8th
10 open – Grands: 1st

Bubba was riding really well here at the Grands in Tulsa. He hardly lost a moto all weekend. If it wasn’t for a few bad breaks in the 10 expert and the 10 cruiser class, he very well could have won all three events. Keep it up Bubba, you’re on your way to being a BMX super star and GT is lucky to have you.

Hey guys, I just got back from Orlando dew tour last night, I drove down there from NC which wasn't too bad. I was going into the comp with a bit of a hurt wrist so I wasn't too excited. I rode dirt on Thursday and my wrist wasn't holding up too well. I ended up in 24th place. Saturday was park prelims and I still could hardly pump around the course, it was real annoying cause I was looking forward to this contest but couldn't even give it my all. I ended up taking it easy and took 30th place.

I went to the doctor this morning in Greenville and had some xays. Everything looks normal but it does not feel like it. I have a MRI appointment tomorrow at 4:30 to get it checked out more.

I'm flying to Cali Friday morning for the ride bmx video "Range Of Motion" premiere that I have a full section in. The premier is Friday night at the ride offices in Orange county. Then I will be in Cali for the weekend. Back home Monday and then to the doc Tuesday to see the results of the MRI. Hopefully nothing too crazy going on in there. Until then I will keep you posted!

AA Pro - Sunday: DNQ

Mike had a really tough time this weekend in Lancaster. His first straight pull wasn’t what he was hoping for, and with the track being a bit on the “easy side”, there wasn’t really anywhere for him to make up ground. He signed a ton of autographs, took a lot of pictures with the fans and even did some TV interview stuff for an upcoming BMX program. All things considered, he did a fine job representing GT Bicycles.

Bradford was not quite the JB we all are used to seeing every weekend at the BMX races. His power, his pull and his skill were there, but if he had any luck this weekend, it was all bad. He had two crashes out of his three motos on Saturday that were not his fault. Sunday he had problems keeping his shoes clipped into the pedals. He won his third moto during qualifying, but ended up tying with another rider for the last transfer spot to the semi finals and had watch from the sidelines. All in all, it was a disappointing weekend for JB.

The Big Daddy of BMX was a bit off the mark here at the ABA Golden State Nationals in Lancaster, CA. He struggled all weekend with his front straight speed and had to do most of his riding from mid pack. As race weekends go, it wasn’t bad though, as he was able to put his GT in the main events for Vet Pro and Pro Cruiser both days.
