Cranky

About Me Casual/ Recreational

Comments about 2014 Timberline 1.0 (Mech):

My first year with the Timberline was uneventful other than bending a rim on Mt. Tremblant (my fault). This year I replaced the tires with 700 x 38 Maxxis Overdrives to increase road and path speed. Unfortunately, both cranks now need to be replaced. They are making a racket and appear to be stripped. I'm not sure if the assembler did not adequately tighten the cranks. My retailer's top bike technician was also not able to adjust the drive train to permit the quiet use of 1st or 2nd gear. In addition, the chain will occasionally jam when pedalling backwards. Perhaps the Acera is not a good match to the frame design. These may all be assembly issues.

Great Entry Level Bike!!!!

Comments about 2014 Timberline 1.0 (Mech):

Got this GT as a birthday gift in April. Been riding the local MTB trials 3 - 4 times a week for 12 plus mile every ride. Going over big roots, rock gardens, down steep declines and the bike has taken some hard hits but still rides like new and has not given me any problems. Rides excellent. Good entry level parts: shifters are nice a smooth and brakes have good stoping power. Might be a little on the heavy side but worth every penny my family paid for it. I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone who is looking for something worth their money. Happy Happy Happy with the 2014 GT Timberline 2014!!!!!!!

Great for my excercise routine and the terrain in which it's used. Love the large tires and smooth gears. Like to see future models lighter in weight.

A Review of the 2013 Timberline 1.0

About Me Commuter

Comments about 2014 Timberline 1.0 (Mech):

When I bought the Timberline 1.0, I wasn't looking for a 29er, or a mountain bike at all, for that matter. I was looking for a straight bar road bike to use for commuting on the days I didn't want to use my hybrid. Since I depend on my bike to get me to work, I wanted to get a second one in case disaster struck. After trying out some used road bikes, I headed down to my LBS which was having a sale on 2013 models. I fell in love with the Timberline immediately. The flat black finish gives it a stealth fighter look, the component package was in line with more expensive bikes in the class, and its stock tires were more commuter-friendly than some of the other 29ers they had in stock. I'm 6'3" and tried the XL frame, which fits like a glove. The bike rides well, shifts well, and does what I need it to do.

My only trepidation with the bike came because the rear wheel went flat twice in the first few days I rode the bike. I took it back to my LBS pretty disheartened at spending money on extra tubes so quickly. They found that the rim strips hadn't been installed well and that the tube was suffering as a result. They re-stripped the rim and... so far, so good. Now that I'm beginning to rebuild confidence in the tires' ability to hold pressure, it's fun to ride it, even though I still rue the money I lost on my first two tubes that were damaged.

As far as drawbacks go, the bike is on the heavy side. I don't mind this, because it is building my strength up a little more than my lighter hybrid does. Now that I've ridden the bike for a week, it's getting easier to really get it up to speed and run fast down the paved trails of Boise's Greenbelt on the 12 miles to and from work. So far, with about 120 miles put on the bike, it's worked well, particularly now that the tube/rim problem seems to have been resolved. I have bought dedicated commuter tires for the bike which should help negate some of the weight and reduce rolling resistance for the type of riding I do.

In all, the Timberline 1.0 has been a great value for the money. I've enjoyed riding it immensely, and look forward to the next few years of doing so.

Comments about 2014 Timberline 1.0 (Mech):

Bought this bike to get some exercise. The bike I had wasn't holding up well. This is the first high quality bike I have ever purchased and wow what a difference. The 29 inch wheels seem to roll over anything and give the bike, a smooth fast ride.
The gearing range is good for speed and climbing. The disk brakes are smooth and quiet. The seat could be a little softer, but could just be me cause I could stand to be in better shape. This bike definitely makes me want to get out and ride.
