Felicia Stancil Signs With Marian University

Jan 28, 2013

We all know that Felicia Stancil is solidly-committed to GT Bicycles for the 2013 USA BMX and Supercross Seasons. And we heard discussions that she would participate in the Collegiate BMX program of some lucky institution of higher learning, after she graduates from high school this Spring.
Collegiate cycling is separate from “trade team” cycling, as it is called in other disciplines–or what we might call the USA BMX program. Riders run the jersey of their school, and compete against athletes from other schools. There is no age group breakdown–in fact, the only requirement is that you are a full-time college/university student. Thus, it is common for athletes to be on both trade (factory) teams, and collegiate teams.
Today, we can confirm that Felicia will be joining Justin Posey, Chase Hines and Bryce Hocking at Marian University in Indianapolis. She is the first to sign on for the 2013-2014 season, but more announcements are on the way.
It wasn’t just Felicia’s mad skills on the bike that got her the scholarship. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and has demonstrated year in, and year out, that she has the discipline to balance her studies and her BMX training, and excel at both.
Marian University BMX Coach, Ryan Birk (above, second from left), said the following of Felicia’s involvement in the program:
“I’ve had the pleasure of watching Felicia grow up racing and winning titles since she was a little girl. Now she has developed into a multi-time world champion, and 2016 Olympic Gold Medal hopeful. The same drive and work ethic she displays as a BMX racer is the same determination she brings to the classroom in her drive to be a successful student. Combining her on-the-track skills and her intelligence in the classroom epitomizes what a Marian University student-athlete should be, and we can’t wait to have her on campus in the fall and be a part of our team.”
We’ll fess-up to the fact that we got wind that this might be coming down at the USA BMX Grand National in November. Thanks to Ryan and Felicia, we were able to do an anticipatory signing ceremony for when the big day came. Pictured above with Felicia (Center) are her sister, Riley, Ryan Birk, and dad, Jamie.
We are anxious to see Felicia in Reno this weekend, where we’ll get more details on her transition from high-schooler to university freshman.
