April 10th UCI World Cup #2 Manchester, England Some call him Prince Liam, however he is the King of the Manchester SX track! We are very proud to write our first race report including Liam and have him take a MASSIVE win on his GT Speed Series AL! Liam has done something no other athlete has done before winning a World Cup 4 years in a row. There have been 4 World Cup events in Manchester and the streak continues with only one winner, Liam Phillips!
The Week started off like any other for Liam. This is his home track, where he trains daily. The guy has every inch of the track dialed and it showed throughout the weekend’s events. On the qualifying day Liam easily walked away with each lap winning all three motos.
Come race day we still saw Liam in his usual 1st place spot all day, but he wasn’t having the fastest laps around the track. Usually Liam is in gate 1 every time as he has the fastest laps around the track and gets first lane choice. We saw him out front, but a few other riders were getting faster lap times in some of the other qualification rounds. This added to the drama, could Liam do it again? Was he able to continue his winning streak?
As the 8 riders lined up in the gate for the final Liam was in gate three, with two of the top USA riders on his inside. One of them being the current World Cup points leader and last World Cup winner Corben Sharrah. The gate went down and Liam had his typical amazing start! He put that perfect lap together and was once again crowned the champion in front of his home crowd, only this time doing it on a GT!
After the main event while on the podium Liam said, “This one meant a lot to me today, it was a rough morning and I really wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to pull off another win, I am ecstatic to win another World Cup in front of the home crowd and it means a lot to share this podium with my countryman!” Liam’s friend and training partner Kyle Evans would finish in 2nd followed by Swiss rider Renaud Blanc rounding out the podium.
Now we have a week off and it is off to South Carolina for the next stop of the USA BMX North American SX series! Thank you for your continued support and see you at the races!
